Tactical Gear Sizing & Fit Guide

Proper sizing is critical for safety, comfort, and performance. Learn professional fitting techniques for all your tactical equipment.

Body Armor Sizing

How to Measure:

  1. 1.Locate sternal notch (hollow at base of throat where collarbones meet)
  2. 2.Measure straight down to approximately 2 inches above navel
  3. 3.This measurement determines plate size - compare to manufacturer chart
  4. 4.For carrier sizing, measure chest circumference at fullest point

Standard Plate Sizes:

Small:8.75" x 11.75"
Medium:9.5" x 12.5"
Large:10.25" x 13.25"
X-Large:11" x 14"

Note: Measurements are for SAPI cut. Shooters cut reduces shoulder width for better rifle shouldering.

Critical Fitting Notes:

  • • Plates must cover heart and lungs completely
  • • Too small leaves vital organs exposed
  • • Too large restricts movement and causes fatigue
  • • Get professional fitting when possible
  • • Test fit with gear you'll wear (clothing layers)
  • • Verify mobility - raise arms, twist, go prone

Boot Sizing

Boot Fitting Process:

Preparation:

  • • Measure both feet (often different sizes)
  • • Try on in afternoon (feet swell during day)
  • • Wear socks you'll use on duty
  • • Bring any orthotics if you use them

Fitting Check:

  • • Thumb width space between toes and boot end
  • • Snug at heel (shouldn't slip when walking)
  • • Comfortable at widest part of foot
  • • Walk, go up stairs, squat to test

Common Boot Sizing Issues:

Too Tight:

  • • Cramped toes
  • • Numbness during wear
  • • Hot spots or blisters
  • • Unable to wiggle toes

Solution: Size up

Too Loose:

  • • Heel slips when walking
  • • Excessive foot movement
  • • Ankle instability
  • • Blisters from friction

Solution: Size down or try narrower width

Just Right:

  • • Snug but comfortable
  • • Room for toe movement
  • • Heel stays in place
  • • Can wear 8+ hours comfortably

Other Gear Sizing

Tactical Pants

Standard waist/inseam sizing (e.g., 34x32). Many tactical pants have flex waistbands with 2-4" adjustment. Measure waist at where you'll wear duty belt (typically at hip bones). For inseam, measure from crotch to where you want hem (account for boots). 5.11 sizing generally runs true, though some users find waist runs slightly large.

Fitting Tips:

  • Try on with duty belt
  • Squat and move to test mobility
  • Consider slight shrinkage after washing

Tactical Backpacks

Size by torso length, not height. Measure C7 vertebra (base of neck) to top of hip bones. Most quality packs have adjustable harness systems. Capacity measured in liters: 20-30L (day pack), 35-45L (2-day), 50-75L (3+ day). For patrol use, 30-40L is ideal for vehicle storage.

Fitting Tips:

  • Test fit with weight
  • Verify vehicle compatibility
  • Check with body armor on

Plate Carriers

Depends on plate size you'll use. Carriers accommodate specific plate sizes (e.g., Medium SAPI). Measure chest circumference for cummerbund sizing. Carrier should fit snug when adjusted - not loose. Shoulder straps and cummerbund should be adjustable for proper weight distribution.

Fitting Tips:

  • Size for your plates first
  • Test mobility fully adjusted
  • Verify works seated in vehicle

Duty Belts

Measure over uniform pants and underbelt at where belt will sit (hip level). Order belt 4-6" larger than measured waist to allow for gear and adjustment. Inner belt should be your pant size or slightly larger. Most duty belts use hook-and-loop for micro adjustment.

Fitting Tips:

  • Account for gear thickness
  • Allow room for seasonal clothing changes
  • Test with full loadout
